Car accidents… Tips on what to do
July 3, 2018

Finding yourself in a car accident can be one of life’s most stressful moments. Then comes all the hassles that’s part of being in a car accident such as: having to file a police report, having to file an insurance claim, getting your car repaired at the auto shop or needing to get a loaner and much more.

As traffic accidents are part of life on the roads of Quebec, it is always essential that drivers practice safe driving habits that are free of any distractions. If for any reason you do find yourself in an accident, the following 5 tips may help you out.

  1. Stop. In moments of stress or panic you need to ensure you never drive or run away from the scene of a car accident. You could get arrested for leaving the scene even if it's only a minor accident with no major damage. If your car can still be driven, you must move your car to the side of the road so that you are not blocking any traffic. Leave your hazard lights on to ensure other cars see you are stopped.
  2. Seek Medical Care. In the initial moments after being in an accident first make sure everyone in the car is ok starting with the driver. What about the other car? If you think someone has been seriously injured in the accident it’s imperative to call 911. Some injuries are not apparent right away and may require you to visit a doctor a day or so after.
  3. Take Photos. Even if today it is a lot more common for drivers to install dashcams, especially in Europe where dashcams are much more widely used, it is still important to take some photos of the accident. Almost all of us have smartphones with cameras allowing us to easily take photos which can help with insurance claims or be used as evidence if needed. There are even apps you can download to your phone to help with taking pictures, filling a claim and give you a checklist of what you need to do.
  4. Exchange Information. When there are police officers on the scene they will be sure to get everyone’s information, however if no police are involved or have been called to the scene it’s important for you to make sure you obtain all the required information from the other driver in question. Be sure to get their full name, phone number in case you need to follow up, address, driver’s license and insurance information as well.
  5. Get Your Car Repaired. Once we are past the initial moments of a car accident we need to step out of the vehicle and asses the actual damage that occurred. In some case you may need to contact a tow truck as your car will not be in driving condition. It is important to make sure you take your car to get repaired at a trusted garage near you. Your insurance company can help with this step. If you are also covered for rental cars they will help you find the closest rental dealership near you.

In moments of high stress such as car accidents it’s always important to remember to stay calm and cool. Our natural instinct may be to immediately blame and accuse the other side for causing the accident but remaining calm ensures both sides are cooperating to try and get through it all.
